38+ Years of British CNC Manufacturing Excellence

Esprit Automation Ltd is a premier British manufacturer specializing in high-performance CNC thermal cutting machines, CAD/CAM nesting software, and industrial fume extraction solutions.

Our journey began in 1986 as a spin-off from an engineering research project at the University of Nottingham. Founded by engineers Geoff Smith and Andrew Cooke, Esprit evolved into a global manufacturer with over 1,500 CNC cutting tables deployed across 30+ countries.

Every machine bearing the Esprit badge is 100% designed, machined, welded, wired, and tested under one roof at our Plackett Mill facility in Sandiacre, Nottingham. By combining robust British mechanical design with cutting-edge electronics and software telemetry, we help fabricators, steel service centres, and industrial manufacturers maximize cut quality, operational uptime, and profit per part.

Our Guiding Philosophy

Driven by Four Core Engineering Pillars

Our core values drive every gantry design, software code update, and customer support interaction.

1. Challenge Status Quo

We continuously push thermal cutting boundaries, replacing legacy paradigms with high-speed precision motion and energy-efficient automation.

2. Technical Innovation

From the pioneering Procut CAD/CAM suite in the 1980s to real-time IRIS telemetry software, innovation is built into our machinery DNA.

3. End-to-End Expertise

Our in-house mechanical engineers, software developers, and field technicians possess master-level mastery over plasma, laser, and oxyfuel dynamics.

4. Total Customer Care

We move mountains for our clients. Remote diagnostics, lifetime technical assistance, and stock-guaranteed spare parts keep your floor producing 24/7.

Esprit Lightning HD plasma cutter running at the Hypertherm European Demonstration Center
World-Class Synergy

Principal Hypertherm OEM Partner Since 1990

In 1990, Esprit Automation selected Hypertherm as its exclusive partner for plasma power sources. Decades later, this partnership remains one of the strongest technical OEM alliances in the thermal cutting industry.

Our engineering team collaborates directly with Hypertherm’s R&D teams to deeply integrate XPR®, HyPerformance®, and Powermax® plasma power sources into our CNC gantries. This seamless integration ensures optimal gas flow, auto-gas console sync, true hole technology implementation, and superior bevel quality.

In recognition of our cut quality and motion accuracy, Hypertherm selected an Esprit Lightning HD machine for active customer cut demonstrations at their European Demonstration Center in Roosendaal, Netherlands.

Our Journey

Chronological History & Innovation Timeline

Explore the milestone achievements that transformed Esprit from a university spin-off into a recognized global CNC machinery brand.

1986 — Foundation & Software Breakthrough

The Birth of Esprit Automation

Founded by Geoff Smith and Andrew Cooke following successful research at the University of Nottingham. Supported by the Prince's Youth Business Trust and DTI innovation grants, Esprit revolutionized the market by launching Procut, one of the first mouse-driven CAD/CAM nesting software suites for thermal cutting.

1987–1992 — Global Export & Hypertherm OEM Alliance

Early Innovation & International Expansion

Esprit launched the original Lightning plasma cutter series in 1988 and expanded sales into Singapore, Malaysia, and Portugal. In 1990, Hypertherm became Esprit's exclusive plasma partner. By 1991, operations moved to expanded premises in Long Eaton, followed by the breakthrough release of the Lightning H and Lightning D high-speed profile cutters.

1995–1997 — The High-Definition Revolution

Setting the Benchmark with Lightning HD

With the advent of High-Definition plasma technology, Esprit unveiled the Lightning HD. Engineered for extreme beam rigidity, rapid acceleration, and tight bevel-free tolerances, the Lightning HD quickly became the industry gold standard for heavy-duty plate cutting.

1998–2000 — Plackett Mill HQ, Arrow & Viper Platforms

Facility Acquisition & Platform Expansion

Esprit acquired Plackett Mill in Sandiacre, Nottingham—a historic 2-acre industrial site converted into our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility. Launch of the Arrow sheet metal cutter for HVAC fabricators, followed by the heavy-duty Viper table designed for 24/7 multi-shift steel processing.

2003–2013 — Advanced Beveling & Platform Diversification

Multibevel & Precision Motion Systems

Introduction of the Cobra plasma and oxyfuel cutting machine, followed by the multi-torch Lightning S. In 2013, Esprit integrated fully automated plasma beveling with the Multibevel, incorporating Hypertherm True Bevel technology for weld-ready bevel preps.

2018–Present — Industry 4.0 Telemetry & Fibre Laser

IRIS Real-Time Telemetry & Photon LITE

Launch of IRIS—an advanced digital monitoring platform providing live telemetry on machine utilization, consumable life, and preventative maintenance. Introduction of the Photon LITE CNC fibre laser cutter, bringing ultra-precise laser cutting to modern sheet metal workshops.
